The E-Number v2.0 library is located across Newcastle-upon-Tyne and ASCUS, Edinburgh. The main elements of the library are based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne whilst the live micro-organisms are residents and part of the microbiology collection at ASCUS.

As a publicly accessible arts & science laboratory, ASCUS is able to facilitate engagement with the E-NUMBER producing micro-organisms within its own laboratory, and also at satellite venues through a temporary Bio-Safety Level 1 License.

Bio Safety License

A Bio-Safety Level 1 License is required by the HSE (Health & Safety Executive) when working with GMO’s (Genetically Engineered Microorganisms). As the live microorganisms within the E-Numbers library fall under this category, a temporary license is required for hands-on use or exhibition.

ASCUS, as a Bio-Safety Level 1 safe laboratory is able to offer advice on using and transporting the E-numbers micro-organism to locations within the U.K. ASCUS has previously provided the relevant support, protocols and documentation for workshops and exhibitions to use and display the live engineered E-Number organisms for a workshop at GreenLab, London and for an exhibition at the Great North Museum: Hancock, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
